Geography Curriculum Statement

At Brentnall Academy, our inclusive geography curriculum is designed to ensure every child is able to access the National Curriculum through a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum. We aim to deliver teaching that ensures the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge and skills, and importantly, for children to develop a love for geography.


At Brentnall Primary, our high quality geography curriculum will inspire children, encourage questions about the world around them and support children to understand their role as global citizens. Our teaching will give pupils a varied knowledge of places and people; resources in the environment; physical and human processes; and the use of landscapes. Alongside this key knowledge, we will support children to develop practical geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways. We want children to enjoy learning about geography by gaining such knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits. In particular, we aim to ensure that the practical element of geography provides all students with the opportunity to engage and succeed. Furthermore, it is important that children at Brentnall appreciate and understand the geographical landscapes of Salford and Manchester.


Through high standards of teaching and learning in geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Geography is taught in alternate cycles each year, building on the knowledge and skills gained in each key stage with a focus on the aims outlined in the National Curriculum.  At Brentnall Academy, we ensure that geography has the same importance given to it as the core subjects, as we feel this is important in enabling all children to gain ‘real-life’ experiences and understand the world they live in.

At Key Stage 1, children begin with a focus on their school environment and local area, using simple maps to identify landmarks and plan basic routes. At this stage, children are beginning to develop their use of simple geographical language. Children should also be familiar with world maps and be able to identify countries.

In Lower Key Stage 2, children build on their learning and start to hone their geographical skills. Maps and language become more complex as children are able to study a wider range of topics including Europe, a climate study of South America and Forests.

In Upper Key Stage 2, children will strengthen their geographical knowledge, using more sophisticated technical terms. Children have the opportunity to take part in field studies, including a river visit, where they can record and analyse their findings in a variety of different ways.

Throughout the curriculum, there are opportunities to make cross-curricular links. For example, in Lower Key Stage 2, children have the opportunity to write a letter to their local council arguing the case for improvements to be made to their local parks. In Upper Key Stage 2, children undertake a project around rivers; alongside their fieldwork and geographical studies, children are able to plan and write a poem inspired by their work. At each stage of the curriculum, geography lessons allow children to develop key skills such as writing to argue and persuade.


Throughout their time at Brentnall, children will gain the geographical skills and knowledge that will prepare them not only for the curriculum demands at Key Stage 3, but for life as a global citizen in an ever changing world.

We want children to have thoroughly enjoyed learning about geography and to leave Brentnall with strong memories of exciting experiences, feeling inspired and equipped with a better understanding of the world around them. A keen, well-trained geographer will have the confidence and drive to undertake new life experiences, ask questions about the world and challenge the status-quo, now and in the future.
